Tip #4 for preventing eating disorders in our daughters.

Do you have BIG feelings and even the little ones suck? If you have feelings you can’t manage, you might want to overeat, restrict, or binge and purge. That way you don’t have to feel what is bothering you.

I had a client who “felt” like she was in trouble or going to get in trouble most of the time.  Of course this was because she did get “in trouble” a lot when she was young. When we are mad at or yelling at our kids a lot and they don’t get good positive reinforcement for doing good, they can feel this way.

Of course, now that she is an adult, there is something she can do about that “feeling” . When we have BIG feelings, it is a little about now and a lot about the house we grew up in. What I mean by this is that when we have overwhelming feelings, we can look back and see where they came from. And as an adult we can learn to “MANAGE” them.

I think this is THE most important skill for enjoying life. When you learn what to do with and how to look at your feelings, you don’t need to run away. You can be awake, aware and present with them. That is the best way to get to the other side of them. Also, feelings can be our biggest clue as to how to move forward in life.

So learn to deal with your feelings and you can teach your daughter, niece, granddaughter how to. And then they won’t need to use food to do so.

What do you think about feelings? Where do they come from and how can we deal with them?
