You Eat What You Are

Step #3 Consciousnesses in Food

Another component of food consumption is consciousness. Even though it cannot be measured, consciousness has been a crucial component of food through the ages. Food is believed to absorb the energy of the person preparing it, serving it and eating it. Think, Like Water for Chocolate. This is something that Buddhist monks have known for ages. In monasteries, cooks are held in very high regard because they are imparting their energy into the food for others to absorb. It is in the best interest of the community to have very peaceful, loving cooks preparing the meals to help promote peace and love among the monks. This was reflected to me during a point in time where I was in the habit of listening to a very disturbing political show each night while I was preparing dinner. I would get angry and disheartened at the state of the world. One day it dawned on me that this was not the energy that I wanted to impart and in turn consume, in my food. I immediately changed my evening ritual and noticed an improvement in my cooking experience and therefore the taste of the food.

Stay tuned in future blogs for step #4.
